All quiet

Posted by Sharny on July 26, 2010

Things have been pretty quiet for a while now, and with reason. Opium Toad faces some struggles right now that will be tough to get out of. As of right now, we still exist but only really because no one wants to call time of death.
However, watch this space as it's unlikely that many of us won't play together in the near future. Already we are practicing with a slightly different line up hoping to come back with something new and fresh for everyone.

Results are in - OT not quite the worst band in the midlands!

Luckily our low expectations held us through to the bitter end and I don't think any of us is crushed with dissapointment (although we've not seen Nick since the night it probably has more to do with his girlfriend and much less to do with the competition. We hope). It was an enjoyable experience anyhow and we've certainly learned a lot. Most importantly we've learned that strangers in a bar generally aren't too keen on us.

Overall that's not especially surprising. Now I think I will finally be able to convince the band to go ahead with plan B and at least get an EP under our belt. Niche market here we come!

Surface Unsigned Round 1: Tonight!

Posted by Sharny on March 20, 2010

Just a quick note to say that Surface Unsigned is upon us, and we've barely done anything that we wanted to do by the time it came around. *sigh*

Oh well, hopefully it'll be a good night. I don't think we have any dreams of getting to the next round but I'm hoping we don't come last. We'll probably come last... Hey well, if you've got no expectations you can't be dissapointed. I'm probably going to be dissapointed. [/endramble]

Anyhow, catch us at The Flapper, we're on at 8pm.

A failed attempt

Posted by Sharny on March 15, 2010

So we ended up getting lost in Derby, go us. Turns out one wrong move can send you on an extremely long detour that becomes almost impossible to fix. There was the possibility that we would have played today but that didn't pan out. Now we will hopefully be coming to the vaults some time in the coming months and we're just focusing on Saturday's Surface Unsigned Round 1 at the Flapper in Birmingham. After that, it's recording away. That's the plan anyhow.

Short notice gig and do you have too much money?

Posted by Sharny on March 5, 2010

Quick note to say that it looks like we're going to be playing in Derby on Monday at The Vaults alongside (or beneath, quite far beneath) Metal Cross and Blindsight. Came as late notice to us, but it should be fun. First time for Toad to hit the road and engage in all sorts of other cheesy punnery.

It also felt worth mentioning that if you have more money than you know what to do with (or perhaps your phone bill is paid by someone else) then you could vote for us in Surface Unsigned. You can do so by texting "Midlands 3148" to 64343. 16+. Texts cost £1.00 plus standard network charges. Please get permission from the bill payer. Customer services: festival@surfaceunsigned.co.uk or contact us on 0800 434 6076. Alternatively you could just give us a pound and it'd probably do us more good. Though we'd likely just spend it on sweets.

That's us for the moment. One day we might go to a studio and start recording our EP but that would require all the members of the band to actually get on and do it rather than just saying we will for about 6 months. Over and out.

Updates and Recent Giggage

Posted by Sharny on February 6, 2010

Howdy everyone. A few updates from us here at Opium Toad. First of all we're now registered on Reverbnation. This was mainly so we could use their widget to put up some tracks on the website. If you head over to the music page then you'll be able to listen to one of our songs, Lying Awake. Others are available on the myspace but unfortunately Reverbnation has quite a low storage limit so I'm going to have to get around that to upload the rest of our tracks, possibly by sacrificing a bit of quality.

I know I've been promising an EP for quite a while but with any luck that is going to be our focus now, we have four songs, easily enough to get an EP down, we're just looking at different studios and possibilities at the moment.

Earlier this week we played down at the Maze in Nottingham. Great times as always. We are as always open to any chances to play live, drop us a message anywhere you like if you're interested.

That's it for now, here's hoping we get that EP sorted soon as that's when things really kick off...I hope...

Merry Christmas/New Year and Facebook Page

Posted by Sharny on December 31, 2009

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Opium Toad.

More importantly, we've finally made ourself a Facebook page which is probably something we should have done a while ago since no one actually uses myspace for anything other than music promotion. No one who values their eyesight anyway.

Currently we've not got anything booked for January but we'd like to have, get in touch over on the gigs page for contact details. If we're not playing however we're going to be writing, at least as soon as our drummer gets back from Norway.
Till next time, enjoy the festive season.

A fun evening at the Admiral Rodney

Posted by Sharny on November 10, 2009

Sunday was our first gig with the current line up, thanks to everyone who made it down, we hope you had a good time. We definitely enjoyed it and it was great to get back out there. The only downer on the occasion was Code:68's last minute drop out due to their drummer leaving them, we wish them the best at finding someone new and hopefully they'll be back on gigging form soon so we can check them out as well.

We're keen to keep up the performing so if you're in need of a band for just about anything in the Nottingham area give us a shout via the gigs page or via our myspace. In the meantime we're back to writing and we've got a lot to be working on so expect new stuff appearing in the coming months.

November Giggage

Posted by Sharny on October 21, 2009

So as it stands right now we're going to playing our first gig with current line up on the 8th of November at the Admiral Rodney Pub in Southwell. We're gonna be playing alongside The Wicked End, Solution Against and Code:68. It should be a fun and relaxed Sunday evening show. Hopefully we'll see some of you out there.

More demo action

Yep, we've got some more tunage up on the myspace in the form of Honour, Glory, Death. It's a very different song to our others up there, just to confuse you guys even more to what we're doing. We have actually settled more on a feel but since this song was already finished we decided to record it and get it out there, just to show that we're capable of spanning our genre even more than is necessary...

Enjoy it, we've got more songs coming up and soon our first gigs with the current line up which will be up here once confirmed.
